Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, pseudonym Witkacy (born February 24, 1885 in Warsaw, died September 18, 1939 in Jeziory) was born in Warsaw as a son of the painter and writer Stanisław Witkiewicz and a music teacher. His father took care of his first years of education, claiming that the school would destroy the individualism of such a young and vulnerable person. Witkacy's tutoring was provided by the most eminent artists and university professors, but against his father's will he started attending the Academy of Fine Arts.
