Józef Brandt (born on 11 February 1841 in Szczebrzeszyn, died on 12 June 1915 in Radom) is one of the most outstanding Polish painters of battle painting of the nineteenth century.
Brandt exerted an extremely strong influence on the development of Polish painting, but also on literature. He ran his private school of painting and was the leader of the so-called Munich school of painting. Although he did not plan an artistic career (initially he started to learn how to build bridges), fate put on his way a few suitable artists, who convinced him to use his undoubted talent.
The first successful work of the painter was the painting Chodkiewicz pod Chocimiem.
Selected works: Departure from Wilanów Jan Sobieski with Marysieńka, Cossack on horseback, Czarniecki near Coldynga, Chodkiewicz near Chocim, A reflection of the Jasir near Martynov.
