Ignacy Aleksander Gierymski (born on 30 January 1850 in Warsaw, died between 6 and 8 March 1901 in Rome) is an extremely sensitive 19th century artist fascinated by light. A precursor of Polish impressionism, a representative of realism. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, his most outstanding period of work falls on the years that the painter spent in Warsaw. During this period he created works based on the everyday life of the poor in Warsaw, but at that time he was not appreciated and in the pursuit of bread he left the country forever. In his art he focused on the issue of the interaction between colour and light. He spent the last years of his life in a mental health institution in Rome.
