Lawrence Alma-Tadema (born on 8 January 1836 in Dronrijp near Leeuwarden, died on 26 June 1912 in Wiesbaden) is a Dutch classicist painter, one of the most outstanding representatives of Victorian painting.
An artisan in early childhood fell ill with an unexpected, according to doctors, incurable disease. This changed his life completely, because his desperate parents allowed him to deal only with what he liked, i.e. painting.
The collection of his works includes mainly genre scenes depicting the ancient world.
Selected works: Roses of Heliogabal, Tepidarium, Portrait of Ignacy Jan Paderewski.
