Johanes Vermeer (born before 31 October 1632 in Delft, died before 15 December 1675) to Dutch painter, whose work is characterized by a strong play of chiaroscuro and unusual compositions.

Vermeer presents mainly genre and historical scenes, he also deals with the prose of everyday life. A significant part of his paintings depicts women, most often sitting at the window, reading a book or listening to music. A lover of realism, he perfectly reflected the character of the times in which he lived. In his paintings he also often criticized human vices, such as drunkenness or promiscuity.
