English painter, one of the most famous representatives of Victorian Neoclassicism. He was born in the family of a well-known and liked official, and took care of art against the will of his family. He left for Italy, where he studied antique art, but a few years later he returned to England because of health problems. No image of the artist has been preserved, as the family destroyed all the souvenirs and documents.
Godward specialized primarily in painting women. He idealized them, inspired by the art of ancient Rome and classical civilization. His work is associated with the works of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Selected works: Classic beauty, Dancer, Athena.
